ENC Statement on the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi
The Ethnic Nationalities Council stands with the people of Burma and the international community in welcoming the Burmese regime’s release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi after almost two decades under arrest. While this is a momentous time of joy, all the peoples of Burma should remind ourselves the fact that there are many more problems to be solved for the country.

1. Today, September 11, 2011, marks the 68th birthday of U Hkun Htun Oo, the leader of the ethnic nationalities, who is still in prison in Burma. U Hkun Htun Oo is the chairman of the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) and also an elected Member of Parliament from Hsipaw Constituency, in the 1990 elections. He served as the chairperson of the United Nationalities Alliances (UNA) and also as a member of the Committee Representing People’s Parliament (CRPP).
