ENC Statement on the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

The Ethnic Nationalities Council stands with the people of Burma and the international community in welcoming the Burmese regime’s release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi after almost two decades under arrest. While this is a momentous time of joy, all the peoples of Burma should remind ourselves the fact that there are many more problems to be solved for the country.

The Position Statement of United Nationalities Federal Council (UNFC) on Peace in the Country

4 December 2011

(1) The armed conflict, which has been going on between the non-Burma nationalities and successive regimes in power in the Union of Burma, is due to denial of equality to the non-Burman nationalities. This lack of equality is the crucial political problem underlying the politics of Burma.

We, the ethnic Nationalities political groups, warmly welcome Your Excellency’s official visit to Union of Burma to promote friendly relations between United States of America and Union of Burma , and to upgrade Burma’s democratic reforms , which is only beginning after half a century under the military dictatorship’s regime. We wish your visit may smooth and success.

Dear President Thein Sein:

I am pleased we had an opportunity to see each other in Bali (Indonesia), at the U.S.-ASEAN Leaders Meeting two weeks ago. I am encouraged that under your leadership your country has undertaken several encouraging steps on the path toward reform.
